This is an Artists' Reception for COLORWISE an exhibit which includes work by Kay Carter, Ralph Elwell, Kerstin Engman, Joanne Houlsen, Deborah Jellison, Anna Kessler, Ted Kessler, Debbie Mitchell, Leecia Price, Suzanne Roberts, & Betty Schopmeyer.
This show represents the work of a group of painters in the Belfast area who employ issues of color in their work, either through use of established color theory or as a conscious departure from it. There are as many different approaches to the painting process and methods of applying paint as there are members of the group.
In this collective of about a dozen, we regard ourselves as experimenters - with encaustic mediums, die-cut stencils ( which we design and make ourselves), mixing cold wax into pigment, gilding with metal leaf, collage-ing or using Photoshop. Some of us paint with acrylics, most use oils and a few, watercolors. Some work alla prima, some en plein aire, others are studio painters.
The group meets to enhance a dedicated practice by exploring color behaviors together - we assign ourselves common exercises where numerous, effective solutions result through interaction of thought, discussion and creative problem-solving.
