Charles Beck

VP of Radio and Television Content

Charles currently serves as the Vice President for Content for Radio and Television, overseeing the programing and operations aspects of both services. Charles began working at Maine Public (then MPBN) on the radio side in Orono in 1980 as both a part-time classical music host and as an intern reporter for Maine Things Considered, and essentially found his calling and never left. Over the years, Charles has held many different positions within the organization, including serving as host for many programs, from classical music to the popular 1980s 5:00 to 7:00 a.m. Bed & Breakfast which eventually evolved into today’s Morning Edition. He considers himself very fortunate to have had an important hand over the years to help shape and grow this valued public radio service for the citizens of this state, and also feels that the programming on Maine Public Television is truly a valued quality educational resource for our community.

Born “from away” in Michigan, Maine has been home more than any other location. Charles considers the eight years spent growing up in Italy and Sweden as a tremendous opportunity for gaining an awareness of European perspectives on issues and learning (and pronouncing) European languages.

Charles holds two undergraduate degrees from the University of Maine in Music and Radio, Television and Film, and a Masters in Communications from Indiana State.

He lives in the mid-coast area which provides a sort of central location for frequent travel to Maine Public’s Bangor, Lewiston and Portland offices.
