Aroostook County Man Accused of Killing Girlfriend Appears in Court

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine (AP) _ A Maine man who hid in the woods for a week after the fatal shooting of his girlfriend has made his first appearance in court.

Jesse Marquis, who's being held at Aroostook County Jail, was arraigned via video conference call at the district court in Presque Isle on Monday.

WAGM-TV reports that the judge read the complaint and Marquis was appointed two attorneys, but no indictment given. A bail hearing was set for June 13 in Caribou.

Searchers finally nabbed Marquis on Friday. He fled into the woods last weekend after leaving a home where the body of 31-year-old Amy Theriault was found.

Attorney Steve Smith says there are a number of possible reasons for Theriault's death besides the crime being alleged against his client.
