Bath Iron Works Faces Strike By Key Union

Members of a key union at Bath Iron Works have voted to go on strike at the end of the week if an agreement cannot be reached on wages and working conditions.

According to a posting on its Facebook page, the Bath Marine Draftsmen’s Association Local 3999 voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike, citing issues in the contract relating to flex time and wages.

The union represents over 700 workers and is crucial to the shipyard, as its members do the design work for new classes of ships and for upgrades to existing naval vessels.

A spokesman for BIW, a division of General Dynamics, issued an email saying that the company is negotiating in good faith.
