Biddeford Man Sentenced to 50 Years for Starting Deadly Fire

BIDDEFORD, Maine - A Biddeford man has been sentenced to 50 years in prison after admitting in a plea deal he started a September 2014 fire that killed two people.

Twenty-year-old Dylan Collins pleaded guilty to arson and felony murder charges. He apologized in a statement read during his sentencing on Monday.

Twenty-three-year-old Michael Moore died of smoke inhalation in the blaze and 21-year-old James Ford died a month later.

Police say Collins acknowledged he lit the fire to scare a former girlfriend for kissing someone else. She and her family escaped.

Collins later referred to the two men who died as "collateral damage.''

Authorities say he used cash to buy a lighter and rubbing alcohol in order to conceal the transaction.
