AUGUSTA, Maine - A legislative committee has voted unanimously in favor of a measure that would make the lobster the state crustacean.

The bill was introduced on behalf of a third-grade class at Brewer Community School. Ninety-nine of the students made the trip to Augusta and got a first hand look at how the state lawmaking process works.

One third grader, who identified herself as Natalie, presented testimony to the State and Local Government Committee.

"We are so proud of our great state," she said. "We were very surprised to learn that the lobster was not an official Maine state symbol. We hope you agree our bill should become a law. Thank you."

A member of the governor's staff spoke in favor of the measure. No one spoke against it. The panel decided to hold it's work session on the measure right after the public hearing so the students could see the entire committee process without having to travel back to Augusta.
