Death at Mill in Old Town Under Investigation

OLD TOWN, Maine - Old Town police and the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating a death at the Expera Specialty Solutions pulp mill in Old Town.

Captain Lee Miller of the Old Town Police says his department responded to a call yesterday about 54-year-old truck driver Mark Guay, who fell from the trailer of his truck. "And he fell approximately 25 feet to the bottom of that hopper," Miller says, "and he died as a result of those injuries."

Miller says Guay fell into a hopper, not a wood chipper as had been previously reported in some media outlets. He says his department has wrapped up its part of the investigation, which OSHA will continue.

A company spokeswoman told The Associated Press that Guay was not an employee of the company, but a contractor.

The formerly closed mill re-opened earlier this year after it was purchased by the Wisconsin-based Expera Specialty Solutions.
