Democrat Declared Winner in Maine District 78 Recount

A recount in Maine House District 78 has determined that Democratic incumbent Catherine Nadeau has beat Republican challenger Benjamin Twitchell III.

That's according to Maine Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap.  Dunlap says that in the final tabulation of ballots Nadeau received 2,400 votes, compared with 2,250 cast for Twitchell.

District 78 covers the town of Winslow and part of Benton.  Twitchell requested the recount after unofficial results indicated that he had lost the election by 148 votes.  In the recount, both candidates gained votes - Nadeau added four to her tally, while Twitchell gained two.

A recount in the race for the seat in District 121, which includes Alton, Corinth, Hudson, Milford and the unorganized territory of Argyle Township, is scheduled for Friday.  Republican Gary Drinkwater requested the recount in that race after unofficial results indicate that he lost to incumbent Democrat Robert Duchesne by 22 votes.

Recounts have also been requested for two ballot questions that voters approved. One legalizes recreational marijuana and the other authorizes a tax surcharge on high earners to help fund public schools.
