Portland’s waterfront could be home to a greatly expanded, high-end marina.
The marina would be part of the redevelopment of the former Portland Co. complex.
James Brady of developer CPB2 says as southern Maine becomes a more popular destination for leisure travelers and larger yachts, more marina space is in demand.
“We believe we’re trying to meet that market by expanding the marina and offering a more upscale, world-class marina facility here at the Portland Co. site,” he says. “The location of the site is phenomenal. I mean we’re closest access to Casco Bay and access to the Atlantic Ocean, so it’s a phenomenal location, but it needs significant investment in the waterfront facilities.”
That includes special equipment that would calm the water in the area, which Brady says is a very rough part of the bay.
The project would about double the size of the marina that’s currently at the site.
The company is at the beginning of the permitting process both for the marina and for the on-land redevelopment of the site; Brady says they’re hoping the marina would be ready for use in the spring of 2018.
