Ex-Mountie Who Smuggled Narwhal Tusks Extradited to US

By David Sharp, The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Maine - A retired Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer is in U.S. custody awaiting trial on charges stemming from the smuggling of narwhal tusks.

Prosecutors say Gregory Logan of St. John, New Brunswick, waived the right to a detention hearing Wednesday after being extradited to Maine.

Narwhals are medium-sized whales known for spiral tusks that can grow longer than 8 feet. They are protected by the U.S. and Canada.

Logan pleaded guilty in Canada to smuggling 250 tusks, worth $2 million, from Canada into Maine in false compartments in his vehicle. He's charged in federal court in Maine with money laundering. Court records didn't indicate if he has a lawyer.

A New Jersey man has been convicted and sentenced in the case. A Tennessee man has pleaded guilty and is awaiting sentencing.
