Fatal Collision Shuts Down I-295 For Several Hours

FALMOUTH, Maine - Maine State Police say hundreds of motorists were stranded after a fatal collision on Interstate 295.

Troopers say the delay was caused Tuesday evening when a teenage motorist rear-ended a car, killing the driver, after traffic slowed because of another crash ahead.

The victim's name wasn't immediately released.

The crashes happened between 6:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. State police urged drivers to seek other routes but hundreds of motorists were trapped on the highway with no alternatives. The northbound lanes and one southbound lane didn't reopen until 10 p.m.

Maine Department of Transportation spokesman Ted Talbot said it is unusual for police to shut down the interstate in Greater Portland for such a long period.
