Growing Economies in Indian Country

Growing Economies in Indian Country

Chiefs from three of the four federally recognized Native American peoples in Maine participated in a roundtable discussion focused on economic conditions among Native American communities. The discussion was moderated by MPBN's Jennifer Rooks. The panel included: Clayton Cleaves of the Passamaquoddy Tribe; Kirk Francis of the Penobscot Indian Nation; Rick Getchell of the Aroostook Band of Micmacs; and Joseph Sockabasin of the Passamaquoddy Tribe. (Brenda Commander of the Houlton Bant of Maliseet Indians was not in attendance).

The talk was hosted by the Four Directions Development Corporation and the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston as a part of its "Growing Economies in Indian Country: Taking Stock of Progress and Partnerships" workshop.

The purpose of the day-long meeting was to bring together several federal agencies and Tribal leaders, economic development professionals and others so that each could share views and identify existing challenges to economic development in Indian Country; identify best practices and solutions that address these challenges; and discuss and learn about federal and regional Native economic development initiatives and programs that are aimed at providing assistance to tribal governments and tribal and independent businesses.

This talk was recorded September 20, 2011 at Hilton Garden Inn in Bangor, Maine.
