Harpswell Man Gets More Than 5 Years for Molesting Girl

PORTLAND, Maine — A Harpswell man has been sentenced to serve more than five years in prison after pleading guilty to sexually molesting a young girl numerous times over two years starting when she was 11.

In addition to five and a half years behind bars, 39-year-old Amos Johnson was sentenced Tuesday to 17 years of probation after pleading guilty to two counts of gross sexual assault. As part of a plea deal, 30 counts were dismissed.

The Portland Press Herald reports the judge acknowledged it was a light sentence, but said it spared the victim from testifying at trial.

If he fails to meet probationary terms, Johnson faces 30 years in prison.

Prosecutors say Johnson began molesting the girl in 2011 and continued the assaults until February 2013.

Johnson apologized in court.
