House Republicans Vow to Block Session on LePage

AUGUSTA, Maine - At a closed caucus, Maine House Republicans have resolved to vote against any proposal to bring the Legislature back for a special session to consider sanctions against Gov. Paul LePage for his obscene voicemail.

“The media has brought up a lot of conversations about whether or not this Legislature should come back into a special session to deal with the issue of Paul LePage," said House Minority Leader Ken Fredette, of Newport. "And all I am simply saying is we are not going to be doing that.”

That effectively blocks a special session. Fredette says no one in his caucus condones the governor’s action or his language. He says the House Republican caucus believes the governor was wrong to leave the obscenity laden voicemail on Democratic Rep. Drew Gattine’s phone, and should continue to apologize for his action.

“The national media is paying attention, the regional media is paying attention, certainly the Maine media is paying attention," Fredette said. "So for anybody to suggest nothing has happened is just not accurate. This is a seismic event. It is an event and issue that he needs to deal with, and I believe he has begun that process.”
