If Approved, Proposed Wind Farm in Aroostook County Would be Largest in New England

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine - Permitting applications for what would be New England's largest wind farm have been submitted to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

Kellen Ingalls, project manager with EDP Renewables, says the Number Nine Wind Farm would be centered in Township 9, Range 3 in Aroostoook County, which is about 15 miles southwest of Mars Hill.

"It's a 250-megawatt wind farm with 119 wind turbines, and it's a total capital of investment of just over $600 million," Ingalls says.

Among the project's features being touted by the company are a $2 million energy reduction fund to pay for heat pumps and efficiency upgrades to Aroostook county residents.
