Land for Maine’s Future Puts Out Call for Project Proposals

A 30-year-old land conservation program, whose last two rounds of voter-approved bond funding were delayed in a political battle with Gov. Paul LePage, says it should have the cash in hand this fall.

Land for Maine’s Future Director Sarah Demers says the group is putting out a call for new project proposals focused on protecting important land resources.

“So anything that might be a trail, a hiking trail, a snowmobile trail, an ATV trail. Lands that provide access to the water, and that can be for swimming, fishing, as well as boating. And then we also are doing farmland projects under this funding round,” she says.

The projects will be funded from the sale of approximately $11.5 million in bonds authorized by voters in 2010 and 2012.

A preference, Demers says, will be given to projects that protect deer wintering habitat, according to guidelines set for the 2012 bond item.

Demers says LMF expects to have all the funding by the time the proposal window closes at 5 p.m. Sept. 1.
