Lightning Could Leave Farm Out Of 2,000 Gallons Of Milk

WESTBROOK, Maine - A lightning strike has damaged key equipment at a Maine dairy farm, and officials say they may lose thousands of gallons of milk.

The Portland Press Herald reports lightning hit Smiling Hill Farm in Westbrook during a passing storm Tuesday.

Farm officials say the strike damaged controls required by the federal government to monitor pasteurization.

Warrant Knight, who is a member of the family that owns the farm, says it may be days before the replacement equipment arrives. One installed, that equipment will need to pass an inspection before milk processing starts again.

Knight says they will likely need to dump 2,000 gallons or more of milk, as it can only wait 72 hours for pasteurization.

He says they may be able to make more milk by Saturday.
