Maine Bear Referendum Supporters to Appeal Court Ruling

Supporters of a measure that would prohibit the use of bait, dogs and traps while bear hunting in Maine are appealing a Superior Court decision denying their request for a temporary restraining order.

Supporters of Question 1 wanted the judge to put a halt to the use of state resources by wildlife biologists and other employees of the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife in their efforts opposing the referendum question. Mainers for Fair Bear Hunting spokesperson Katie Hansberry.

"We are filing the appeal and we will be continuing with this litigation to ensure that Inland Fisheries and Wildlife lives up to their promises not to use any more public funds to campaign," says Mainers for Fair Bear Hunting spokesperson Katie Hansberry, "and also that they will continue to produce the documents that the judge ordered them to produce."

Hansberry says the judge denied the TRO without the benefit of evidence contained in the newly-produced documents.
