Maine Ethics Commission Fines Group for Campaign Flier

SKOWHEGAN, Maine — A nonprofit group led by a Republican state legislator is being penalized $672 for failing to disclose spending on a campaign flier targeting Democratic Rep. Jeff McCabe.

The Maine Ethics Commission contacted Republican Rep. Larry Lockman of Amherst after the Morning Sentinel reported on the fliers, which claimed that McCabe supported harboring illegal immigrants and terrorists in Maine.

Lockman, who’s president of the conservative New England Opportunity Project, told the Morning Sentinel that the fliers were intended for fundraising.

But the commission said they’d likely be classified as election materials given the political content and the timing before the election.

Lockman told the newspaper that his group agreed to file a disclosure form but he still says the flier shouldn’t be classified as campaign literature.
