Maine Investigating Death of Inmate Who Died in Custody

An inmate at the Androscoggin County jail was found unresponsive on Thursday evening and later died at a local hospital.

Scott Harmon, 52, of Auburn was facing felony drug-related charges. He had been in custody at the jail for just 24 hours when a corrections officer doing rounds discovered Harmon was having difficulty breathing.

Androscoggin County Sheriff Eric Samson says Harmon was transported to Central Maine Medical Center, where he died.

“We have both an internal investigation going on, just to make sure our policies, procedures and practices are followed, and we called the state police major crimes unit, as they will conduct a criminal investigation, which is normal under a situation like this,” he says.

Samson says the state medical examiner is also investigating the cause of death.
