Construction has begun for Maine Medical Center's $500 million expansion.
The hospital's Chief Operating Officer Jeff Sanders says the entire project will take about five years.
"What we're starting today is construction that will eventually add 128 private rooms, 19 procedure rooms for surgery and cardiac care at Maine Medical Center, and additional parking for our visitors and employees, which is much needed," Sanders says.
Starting Monday, May 7, there will be a traffic detour on Congress Street between Forest and Weymouth Streets. The detour will last for two months to make way for a crane needed to add multiple floors to Maine Med's East Tower and parking garage.
The modernization project will add more private patient rooms, procedure rooms, as well as parking spaces.
