Maine Students Score Above National Average in Science

PORTLAND, Maine - Recent data shows that students in Maine have continued to score above the national average in science on the National Assessment of Educational Progress test.

The Portland Press Herald reports Maine students ranked in the top 10 nationally when comparing average scores on the test, which measures knowledge in physical science, life science and Earth and space sciences.

On a national scale, there was a slight increase in the percentage of students' scores that were graded at or above proficient on the test.

The number of eighth-grade students in Maine who scored at or above proficient followed this trend and jumped a small amount in 2015 in comparison to 2009.

Education reforms in Maine include the adoption of Common Core standards, new state assessments and a proficiency-based graduation model.
