Manna to Close Addiction Treatment Centers

A Bangor nonprofit that provides addiction counseling and services for the poor will be closing its two faith-based drug and alcohol treatment centers after accepting more than $1 million in Medicaid overpayments from the state.

Leeanne Hewey, a board member for Manna Industries Inc., said that the board has been advised by Manna executive director Bill Rae that the publicity surrounding Manna’s financial problems now threatens contributions that fund its other services.

“When I spoke to Bill, he said last year at this time he was receiving anywheres in excess of $2,000-$4,000 a week in local support to help with the ministry and the community outreach through the food pantry and the clothing and all of that and now it’s less than $1,000,” Hewey said.

Hewey said Manna Industries has entered into an agreement with the state Department of Health and Human Services to repay $1.3 million in overpayments to its drug treatment programs.

The agency has been serving the greater Bangor area since 1991.
