PORTLAND, Maine - Maine State Police say two drivers are in critical condition following a crash on Interstate 95 in Pittsfield.
Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland says a truck driver was heading southbound in the northbound lanes of I-95 just before 7 p.m. Sunday. He says the crash - and, in particular, one big question - is still being investigated:
"That's obviously going to be the key focal point of the investigation - why this man was driving the wrong way on the Interstate," he says. "We will obviously try to retrace his footsteps to find out where he'd been and where he was going. But at the moment we don't have an answer."
Police tried to divert the driver, identified as 70-year-old Hugh Brawn, of Clinton, Maine, but didn't arrive in time. The car hit a northbound vehicle driven by 19-year-old Tristan Kaldenberg, of Littleton, Massachusetts.
Both drivers have injuries that McCausland describes as life threatening. He says there's been no update as to their conditions, and he's not expecting one in the next few hours.
