Police: Man Fatally Shot by Officer in Bangor Returned Fire

BANGOR, Maine - Police officials confirmed that the Swan's Island man fatally shot by an officer during a foot chase in Bangor earlier this week had exchanged fire with the officer before his death.

The Portland Press Herald reports that Bangor Police Chief Mark Hathaway issued a statement Thursday that said Joshua Jozefowicz had a loaded gun during the incident on Dec. 1.

On that night, police say Officer Ryan Jones fatally shot Jozefowicz while pursuing the 23-year-old as he attempted to flee a traffic stop. An autopsy Wednesday showed Jozefowicz's cause of death was from multiple gunshot wounds.

Hathaway's statement didn't say how many shots were fired.

Jones has been placed on paid leave as the Maine Attorney General's Office investigates the shooting.
