Portland Council May Abolish "No Protest" Buffer Zone

The Portland City Council Monday will consider repealing the city ordinance barring protests within 39 feet of the Planned Parenthood clinic downtown.
The U.S. Supreme Court recently struck down a similar Massachusetts law.   And anti-abortion protestors have a federal suit pending against the ordinance.
The Portland Press Herald reports that city attorneys are recommending the council repeal the ordinance.
Portland councilors Monday will also consider joining a Maine Municipal Association lawsuit challenging the LePage administration's threat to cut off General Assistance reimbursements if cities don't cut off such aid to all undocumented immigrants.
And it will also look at court rulings that could force a change in the city's policy toward panhandlers.
