Portland Councilors Support Move to Organic Land Management

PORTLAND, Maine - Two members of Portland's City Council say they would support a proposal to significantly restrict pesticide use in the city.

The councilors say Portland's pesticide ordinance should be modeled after one that South Portland is considering. Portland's ordinance is being drafted now.

The South Portland proposal would place restrictions on synthetic pesticide use on most city-owned land. It would also restrict use on private property.

The Portland Press Herald reports that the two members of the City Council's Energy and Sustainability Committee support a move toward organic land management practices.

A public hearing on the proposal could take place as soon as April 20. Members of an environmental group attended Tuesday night's sustainability committee meeting to support the adoption of pesticide restrictions.
