Portland's Mysterious Google Barge to be Scrapped

PORTLAND, Maine — The structure on the so-called Google barge docked in Portland Harbor appears headed to the scrap heap.

The barge carries dozens of containers that create a four-story building. Google reportedly envisioned the barge as one of three floating luxury showrooms in San Francisco, New York City and Los Angeles. But the city of Portland's spokeswoman says the structure is being sold and dismantled.

The Portland Press Herald reports an international barging company is buying the barge and taking it on an ocean voyage. Portland Harbor's deputy harbor master says the containers will be disassembled and scrapped.

The barge first docked in Portland Harbor in October and moved to South Portland on Wednesday. The Portland spokeswoman says the city received $400,000 in state reimbursements while it docked in Portland Harbor.
