Presque Isle Wins Grant for Cultural Arts Center

The University of Maine at Presque Isle has been awarded $50,000 to help it develop a new, Northern Maine Center for the Cultural Arts.

"We have such a rich history of the arts here in northern Maine that we kind of keep to ourselves a lot," art professor Heather Sincavage says. "So, I think this building can be a spotlight to that, bringing people to the region to see what we have to offer."

In addition to promoting "cultural tourism," Sincavage says the new center will make the arts more accessible to local residents "who can't leave the region or don't leave the region."

The $50,000 grant comes from the National Endowment for the Arts. The University of Maine at Presque isle will be working with the Wintergreen Arts Center, the City of Presque Isle and other partners to convert a building at 149 State St. in Presque Isle into the new cultural arts center.
