Researchers to Hold Sea Lice Conference in Portland

PORTLAND, Maine — Researchers from around the world will present their findings on sea lice next week in Portland at the International Sea Lice Conference at the Gulf of Maine Research Institute. The conference will focus on sustainable solutions to the sea lice problem around the world.

In recent years sea lice have become a major problem for farmed fish in eastern Maine. The lice fasten themselves to caged fish and negatively affect their health and their appearance. Fish farmers have found some ways to kill sea lice using pesticides, but critics say those methods are harmful to the marine environment — particularly to lobsters.

It's the tenth year the conference has been held and the first time it has taken place in the U.S.
