SACO, Maine (AP) _ Saco is the fourth community in Maine to ban single-use plastic shopping bags.
Critics of plastic shopping bags say they're not biodegradable, create litter and are harmful to marine ecosystems. Saco's ban goes into effect in 30 days but the city won't enforce it for six months.
Councilor Alan Minthorn said there are newer alternatives that are biodegradable.
In 2015, the town of York became the first community in Maine to ban single-use plastic bags altogether. Freeport and Kennebunk approved bans the following year.
Portland and South Portland adopted fees for single-use plastic and paper bags.
