Saco to Vote on Medical Marijuana Restrictions

Tuesday night the city of Saco is holding a public hearing on a proposed ordinance that would put restrictions on where commercial medical marijuana caregivers can be located.

The ordinance would require all new commercial medical marijuana caregivers to operate their business in one of Saco’s industrial zones as opposed to out of their residences.

Saco City Administrator Kevin Sutherland says in a press release that the proposed zoning change is to alleviate logistical and safety concerns, and would only apply to caregivers licensed to grow for customers, not those who grow for themselves or family members.

But Catherine Lewis of Medical Marijuana Caregivers of Maine tells the Portland Press Herald that the proposal is an overreaction to what she describes as “mom and pop” businesses that have a garden at home.
