PORTLAND, Maine - Vermont U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders will appear at Deering High School this evening for his second stump speech for Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
The event is part of Sanders’ late 12-state blitz designed to ensure that progressive voters turnout on Election Day.
Massachusetts U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren is on a similar cross-country swing.
The two progressive firebrands are attempting to close an enthusiasm gap between Clinton and Donald Trump that's reflected in several national tracking polls.
Democrats have an edge in early voting, including in Maine where they have outpaced Republicans in absentee ballot returns by nearly 2-to-1.
Sanders last appeared in Maine in October when he held a rally in Bangor.
During that visit he told the crowd that his goal is to help Clinton get elected so that Democrats can implement a progressive platform that he helped craft after a tough primary fight with the former Secretary of State.
The policy initiatives include overturning the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision that unleashed a flood of election spending, raising the minimum wage, pay equity for women, broadening Social Security, tuition-free college and infrastructure spending.
Sanders is expected to begin speaking at 6:45 this evening.
