PORTLAND, Maine (AP) _ Maine gubernatorial candidate Eliot Cutler is getting an endorsement from a fellow independent, U.S. Sen. Angus King.
The senator and former governor announced his support for Cutler in the three-person battle for governor, telling reporters Monday that he believes Cutler is the best of the three. He said there would be ``significant advantages'' to having an independent governor who could make the best appointments, regardless of party affiliation.
Cutler, who trails in the polls behind Republican Gov. Paul LePage and Democratic U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud, is looking for a boost.
King, who caucuses with Democrats, also endorsed Cutler in 2010 when he lost to LePage by nearly 2 percentage points.
Cutler is largely self-financing his effort and has been pushing for early debates to raise his profile.
