Sun Life Financial Looks to Create 200 Jobs in Scarborough

PORTLAND, Maine — A major employee benefits company plans to bring 200 jobs to Cumberland County with a new office in Scarborough.

Sun Life Financial publicist Devon Portney Fernald says the company will start recruiting shortly for about 100 positions in the new office.

"Some of the positions in this office will be disability experts already with the company who work in the area," she says. "But there will be a lot of new jobs as well. We plan to open the office in April, and then over the next couple of years they'll hire about an additional 100 people."

The company plans to fill the approximately 200 positions by 2017.

The Toronto-based company, which manages disabilities benefits, has its U.S. headquarters in Wellesley, Massachusetts. It also has offices in Connecticut and Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

Fernald says it made sense to put a new office close to the company's other New England offices, and the Portland area is also known as something of a hub for the health care management industry.

"It really is known for having professionals with the highest level of expertise in this field, so that's why we wanted to go there," she says, "so we can have a pool of talent to draw from that will be the best in the industry."

Gov. Paul LePage's administration is praising the move, which LePage says is further evidence that Maine is a great place to do business.
