Train Layover Facility to be Unveiled

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority will unveil a new layover facility in Brunswick this weekend that will service Amtrak Downeaster trains overnight.

The authority is planning to hold a public open house at the layover shed on Saturday. A spokeswoman says this may be the public's last opportunity to see the building's interior.

The Portland Press Herald reports that the 60,000-square-foot facility will become fully operational on Nov. 21. It will allow the Amtrak Downeaster to operate a third train between Brunswick and Boston.

Rail authority special projects manager Jim Russell says the $13 million facility has the capacity to park three full-sized trains in a fully enclosed, heated building. Trains can enter or exit through 18-foot-tall bay doors.

Construction began in October 2015 and is mostly complete.
