Trump Aiming for a Share of Maine's 4 Electoral Votes

PORTLAND, Maine - Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump may not win Maine, but he hopes to nab at least one of the state's four electoral votes.

Democrat Hillary Clinton was leading in most pre-election polls in Maine, but Trump and Clinton were in a tight race in the state's sprawling 2nd Congressional District. A victory there would give Trump a single electoral vote, even if he loses the statewide vote.

Three of Trump's five visits to Maine this year have focused on the 2nd District.

Clinton didn't visit Maine, but sent surrogates including her daughter, Chelsea, and former rival, Vermont U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Maine and Nebraska are the only states that can split their electoral votes. It's never happened in Maine since the system was put in place for the 1972 election.
