The University of Michigan will strip the name of a former University of Maine president from a campus building.
Michigan’s Board of Regents voted to remove Clarence Little’s name Thursday night. Little became Michigan’s president after leaving UMaine.
Critics say Little supported selective reproduction, also known as eugenics, and that those teachings have been embraced by white supremacists.
Little’s name is also on a building at the University of Maine. In an email, a UMaine spokesperson says that while the university is always open to discussion around community concerns, at this point there has been no formal consideration of a name change.
According to its website, Little founded the Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor in 1929.
Little was also accused of sowing doubt about the connection between smoking and cancer.
