Warden Service Investigates Drowning Death on Maine Lake

WHITING, Maine - The Maine Warden Service says a Machias man drowned after his kayak overturned on a lake in rural eastern Maine.

The service says 48-year-old Allen Devericks was kayaking with his 22-year-old daughter Brandi on Indian Lake in Whiting on Wednesday evening when his kayak overturned. Brandi's kayak also capsized when she attempted to help.

The service says a rescuer heard cries for help and tried to rescue the pair in a canoe, but it overturned as well. The rescuer was then able to tow Brandi to shore in another boat, but Devericks was unable to stay afloat and slipped beneath the surface of the water.

The warden service says the pair had life jackets with them but they were not being worn. The incident remains under investigation.
