Water District Plans New Treatment Facility in Biddeford

A major southern Maine utility district is continuing its year-to-year capital plan with an $8.7 million investment in infrastructure upgrades.

The Maine Water Co. has earmarked $2 million of that amount for the design and permitting of new water treatment facility in Biddeford.

“The balance of the work will be infrastructure replacement projects across the state, mostly pipe, watter main replacements, but it also includes water meters and pumps and vehicles and things that we need for our service to meet our customers’ expectations,” says Rick Knowlton, vice-president of Maine Water. “Most of the water systems, the public water systems in Maine began in the late 1800s, the treatment facility in Biddeford that we are planning to replace went online in 1884 and portions of that facility are still in service today.”

Knowlton says the new South Street facility will be designed with customer growth and company expansion in mind. He says Maine Water serves 32,000 customers in more than 20 communities statewide.
