The effort to recall Waterville Mayor Nick Isgro is moving forward.
Deputy City Clerk Sarah Cross says petition circulators met Wednesday's deadline and gathered enough valid signatures to force a recall election.
"They needed 857 signatures,” she says. “They had a total of 887 certified signatures with a total of 1033 signatures turned in as of yesterday."
Isgro received national attention after tweeting an insult to one of the Parkland school shooting survivors. A Republican, he also has a record of making divisive comments about immigrants and public education on social media and for advancing conspiracy theories.
Isgro did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Waterville City Council now has 45 days to set a date for a special election.
"We are hoping they will put it with the June 12th primary election, but it is up to the council to decide,” Cross says. “They have to have a special election within 45 days."
Cross says the council will meet next week to establish the date.
