More than 100,000 people in the U.S. are waiting for a life-saving organ transplant, but only about 40,000 transplants take place each year. Hundreds of people Maine need a kidney transplant. To mark National Donate Life Month, we’ll learn about live organ donation in Maine, which primarily involves kidney donations. We’ll also discuss the recent transplant of a pig’s kidney to a human.

Tue Apr 16 – THE FUTURE OF GAZA

The latest on the war in Gaza. We’ll hear from experts and get answers to questions about the fraught situation there, and why there are no easy answers to what the Israelis, Palestinians or United States can or should do. We’ll also hear about the devastating experiences of the first Palestinian doctor to work in an Israeli hospital, and how he is dedicating his life to working for reconciliation and peace in his home region.

Wed Apr 17 – BIODIVERSITY IN YOUR BACKYARD

The tidy, weedless expanse of Kentucky bluegrass that defines a traditional American lawn provides little benefit to the environment. We'll learn how to introduce biodiversity to your yard--not only to promote habitat for wildlife and support a healthy environment, but for the beauty of it as well. Some tips include: less mowing, more native plants and trees--and letting those dandelions grow.

Thu Apr 18 – HOUSING SERIES: SHARED LIVING SOLUTIONS

A growing movement in response to the housing crisis taps into the age-old tradition of shared living arrangements. People used to live in intergenerational households, or boarding houses or use communal spaces. These shared-home options are varied, but all seek to alleviate the lack of adequate affordable housing in Maine. This show is part of our series: "The Cost of Living: Maine's Housing Shortage."

Fri Apr 19 – ARE WE GOVERNED BY A SOCIAL CONTRACT?

Merriam-Webster defines a social contract as “an actual or hypothetical agreement among individuals forming an organized society or between the community and the ruler that defines and limits the rights and duties of each.” We’ll trace the roots of the idea of a social contract back to the philosophers Thomas Hobbes and John Locke and examine how people today view their obligation toward their fellow human beings.
