Coming Up on Maine Calling:

This Week on Maine Calling -

Mon Apr 22 –EARTH DAY: CLIMATE FUTURE – HOPE & FEAR

As we hear dire warnings about the pace of climate change and what it means for the health of our planet, how should we react: with hope or fear? Some feel fear is the only way to spur collective action to prevent climate disaster. Others turn to hope to prompt people to seek solutions and believe in a sustainable future. What approach will help our society do what it takes?

Tue Apr 23 – LEGISLATIVE ROUNDUP

After staying up all night to approve a supplemental budget, the legislature wrapped up its session early Thursday morning. Our Political Pulse team explains what this legislative session accomplished—such as sweeping gun safety measures—and what was left unresolved.

Wed Apr 24 – COLLEGE 101

For high school seniors, these can be anxious times. Not only are those headed to college trying to determine which school may be best for them, they are also waiting on financial aid offers. Major delays in the new FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Air) have left students and families without the financial information they need in order to decide between colleges. Experts will answer questions about changes in the path to post-secondary education—and how to pay for it.

Thu Apr 25 – MAINE CALLING AT 11 AM PRE-EMPTED FOR SUPREME COURT COVERAGE

Maine Public will broadcast live coverage of Supreme Court oral arguments regarding Donald Trump’s claims of Presidential immunity. Maine Calling’s 7 pm rebroadcast will be about “Art, Community & Healing”—original air date April 12, 2024.

Fri Apr 26 – ARBOR DAY: THE STORY OF THE AMERICAN CHESTNUT

Before 1904, about one of every four trees in our eastern forests was an American Chestnut. But then this once-dominant tree was wiped out by disease. We’ll learn how a mostly volunteer-driven effort has brought the tree back from near extinction. And we’ll find out how Maine has more living wild chestnut trees than any other. What lessons can we learn from the story of the American chestnut about protecting trees from threats?
