Bangor Savings Bank Warning About Scam

Bangor Savings Bank is warning the public — both customers and noncustomers — about a text-based phishing scam the bank says is working its way through Maine.

Bangor Savings Chief Risk Officer Andrew Grover says the company has been contacted by a number of customers who’ve received text messages asking the recipient to contact Bangor Savings Bank. Grover says the number provided in the text is not a Bangor Savings number.

“When you contact them they are going ask you a bunch of questions and which case all they’re trying to do is they’re trying to get account information. At this point nothing has been compromised. Nothing has been compromised until you give them the information,” he says.

Grover says Bangor Savings and other banks will never initiate phone, text or email messages asking for a customer’s ATM or debit card information. He says those receiving the text should not respond and should delete the text.
