Calls for Motorist Assistance Skyrocket as Extreme Cold Hits New England

PORTLAND, Maine - Mainers woke up this morning to the coldest temperatures of the season so far.  That doesn't mean their cars woke up.

AAA Northern New England says that by 10 a.m. it had already responded to 2,000 calls from motorists in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. By noon, that number had risen to 3,000.

"Having a bitter cold day like we do today the vast majority of those calls are battery related," says AAA spokesman Pat Moody, "so most of them are jump starts. Some of them are batteries that need to be replaced with our mobile battery service."

Moody says AAA is expected to respond to between 5,000 and 6,000 calls from the three states by the end of the day.  He says, on a typical winter winter day, the company responds to around 2,000 calls.

Moody says a day like today is a reminder for motorists to make sure their batteries are in good condition and ready for extreme cold.
