A surge of false news stories circulated during the Presidential election season--some say they influenced the outcome, particularly the fake news on social media. How do we discern what news is valid or unbiased? And how does the way that we consume news today affect what we know?

Guests:  Josh Roiland, Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication & Journalism and a CLAS-Honors Preceptor of Journalism in the Honors College at the University of Maine.

Jon Greenberg, staff writer with PolitiFact. He was part of the PolitiFact team during the 2012 presidential election and was one of the fact-checkers who launched PunditFact in 2013. He was executive editor at New Hampshire Public Radio and a Washington reporter for NPR. He has twice won awards from the Society of Professional Journalists for investigative reporting.

Jeanne Bourgault, CEO of Internews, an international nonprofit organization whose mission is to empower local media worldwide to give people the news and information they need, the ability to connect and the means to make their voices heard.
