Fallen Law Enforcement Officers Remembered at Ceremony in Augusta

With a twenty-one-gun salute, hundreds of police officers from across Maine paid tribute to law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty.

Bucksport Police Chief Sean Geagan, president of the Maine Chiefs Of Police Association, spoke at the annual ceremony before a monument at the state capital.

“Always remember…that although we call it a thin blue line, it is very strong. And it will never be broken,” Geagan said.

The 85 names engraved on the monument mall were read aloud, and Fryeburg Reserve Police Officer Nathan Desjardins’ name was added to the list. Desjardins died last June when his boat overturned while searching for a woman who had fallen from her canoe.

Somerset County Sheriff Deputy Eugene Cole, who was shot and killed last month, was also honored at the ceremony, but his name will not be added to the monument until next year.

This was the 27th ceremony honoring law enforcement.
