Maine Attorney General Joins Suit to Force Energy Efficiency Rules

Maine Attorney General Janet Mills has joined with ten other states in suing the Department of Energy to issue efficiency rules first published by the agency last December.

The rules affect air conditioners, battery backup systems, air compressors and walk-in coolers and freezers, and Mills says the savings to consumers are significant.

“$11.6 billion estimated savings to consumers and businesses over time and reducing emissions by more than 159 million tons,” she says. “That’s huge.”

Mills says the rules were supposed to be finalized and take effect months ago. She says the lawsuit seeks a court order to force DOE to implement the standards.
