Maine Lawmakers To Reconvene Next Week

AUGUSTA, Maine - Democratic House Speaker Sara Gideon and Republican Senate President Michael Thibodeau are calling lawmakers back to Augusta to deal with vetoes and unfinished business.

Lawmakers will meet Wednesday, May 2, to deal with vetoes of bills from the governor. They will then have to vote to either extend the session or comeback for a special session in order to take up key issues, like school funding, tax conformity and marijuana sales.

Gov. Paul LePage's vetoes of bills including expanded access to a medication that reverses overdoses. LePage also vetoed a bill that to protect a $2.2 million child abuse prevention program that is slated to be eliminated this fall.

A two-thirds majority in both chambers is needed to override the veto.

This story has been corrected; a previous version stated that lawmakers would work on issues starting May 2. They will be dealing with vetoes from the governor, not yet working on other legislation.
