Maine Minimum Wage Hike Supporters Confident of Victory

PORTLAND, Maine - Supporters for a minimum wage increase in Maine say they're confident that Question 4 will pass.  Mainers for Fair Wages are awaiting election results at Stroudwater Distillery in Portland.

Campaign manager Amy Halsted says the key to victory for a minimum wage boost is to get voters to the polls, and that's been the focus of Mainers for Fair Wages in recent weeks.

"We've knocked on thousands and thousands of doors in the past few weeks sharing information about where people can go to vote early and how to find your polling locations today," Halstead says.

If Question 4 passes, it will raise the minimum wage to $12 an hour by 2020.  The Maine Restaurant Association opposes the measure because it would also raise base pay for tipped employees to the adjusted minimum wage.  Currently tipped employees can be paid half the minimum wage if their tips make up the difference.
